Taiwan weighs broader AI chip export curbs to China
What's new: The move could make AI chip smuggling to China a criminal offense in Taiwan for the first time.
Taiwan is considering tougher export controls on artificial intelligence chips bound for China, a step that would bring its rules closer to US restrictions and give prosecutors stronger tools against smuggling. Officials are weighing limits on sales to all customers in China, not only blacklisted firms such as Huawei Technologies, the report said. Taiwan currently warns sellers they may violate US rules, but unauthorized exports are not themselves a crime under local law, forcing authorities to rely on charges such as falsified documents. The proposed changes are being discussed as part of trade talks with Washington and could mark one of President Lai Ching-te’s most far-reaching moves yet to protect Taiwan’s semiconductor sector and national security interests.
