Taiwan Launches Intelligence Portal for Chinese Residents

The site is blocked in China, but Taipei hopes people will still send information through secure channels, including from abroad.

Taiwan's government on Sunday (14/6) launched a website inviting Chinese residents to send intelligence through what it described as secure channels. Taiwan's National Security Bureau said the move comes amid persistently high tensions between Taipei and Beijing and a rise in outreach from individuals seeking to provide information to Taiwanese authorities. In its statement, the bureau said economic pressure, tight political controls and social problems in China were fueling public dissatisfaction. The site is blocked in China, but many users there are known to use VPNs to access censored services. Taiwan said similar models are also used by intelligence agencies in the United States, Britain and Israel. Last year, Beijing also opened an online channel to receive reports related to suspected Taiwan independence activity.
