Suspect detained after fire guts Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest in Bavaria
What’s new: About 200 firefighters battled the remote mountaintop blaze, and police had not established a cause.
German police detained a suspect after a fire tore through the Eagle’s Nest, the Nazi-era Kehlsteinhaus high above Berchtesgaden in Bavaria. Authorities said a smoke detector triggered an alarm around 9:50 p.m. on Oct. 23, and about 200 firefighters and emergency workers were sent to the site. Police said no one was inside and no injuries were reported. Fire crews struggled to reach and fight the blaze because of the building’s altitude and difficult access, and a police spokesperson told Bild the structure was so badly damaged it might not be saved. Investigators were still examining whether the detained man was linked to the fire.
