Supreme Court revives Trump's mail voting order before midterms

What's next: separate rulings still block the Postal Service nationwide, leaving only weeks to make any ballot-mail changes.

The Supreme Court on Monday paused a lower-court ruling that had blocked key parts of President Donald Trump's order to tighten mail-in voting rules in 23 states and Washington, D.C., ahead of the fall midterms. The order directs federal agencies to build lists of adult U.S. citizens and eligible mail voters, and tells the U.S. Postal Service to deliver ballots only to people on those lists while requiring specific barcodes on ballot envelopes. But the practical impact may be limited for now: a separate Aug. 11 ruling by U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani still bars USPS from carrying out the order nationwide, and some states are set to start sending absentee ballots within weeks.
