Supreme Court lets Trump end TPS for 356,000 Haitians and Syrians

Why it matters: The 6-3 ruling clears the way for swift deportation risk and could shape TPS cases involving other countries.

The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status for about 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians, reversing lower-court orders that had kept the protections in place. The 6-3 ruling lets the Department of Homeland Security move ahead with ending a program that shields migrants from deportation and allows them to work legally in the United States. TPS for Haitians began after the 2010 earthquake, while Syrians received it in 2012 during the civil war. The administration argued courts cannot review those decisions. Immigration lawyers argued Haiti and Syria remain unsafe and said the terminations were rushed and unlawful.
