Sumatra flood recovery reaches 96%-98%, risks remain high
All more than 2 million evacuees have left shelters, but sediment buildup in 137 rivers still threatens new flooding.
Recovery from floods and landslides in Aceh, Sumatra Utara, and Sumatra Barat has reached 96%-98%, but the government still faces the threat of follow-on flooding because of heavy rain and river sedimentation. At a coordination meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs office in Jakarta on Monday (26/10), Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian said roads and bridges hit by the disaster are generally functional again, although some local bridges still need further repairs. PRR Task Force data as of October 26, 2026 showed the late-November 2025 disaster affected 53 regencies/cities, 498 districts and 4,533 villages/urban wards. All evacuees, once numbering more than 2 million people, are now said to have returned home or to other housing. PMK Coordinating Minister Sugiono called for faster completion of the remaining work alongside climate change mitigation.
