Strong El Nino through January 2027 threatens Aceh Besar rice fields

The drought is already disrupting rice planting and raising the risk of failed planting and lower harvests.

Prolonged drought has begun drying out several rice field areas in Aceh Besar regency, Aceh, and disrupting rice planting. Cracks are visible in some plots, while farmers continue planting by using the remaining water in irrigation channels. The conditions increase the risk of failed planting and reduce agricultural productivity. BMKG Aceh has warned that most areas of Aceh Province have already entered the dry season, while the El Nino phenomenon is expected to strengthen to a strong intensity through January 2027. The threat adds pressure on farmers, who are hoping for rain soon and for irrigation supplies to return to normal so rice crops can grow well.
