Steve Hilton advances to November in California governor race
What's next: Hilton will face Xavier Becerra after edging out Tom Steyer in the state's top-two primary.
Republican Steve Hilton locked up a spot in California's November governor election after ballot counting from the June 2 primary pushed him ahead of Democrat Tom Steyer. Hilton, a former adviser to ex-British Prime Minister David Cameron and a former Fox News host, will now face former Biden administration Health Secretary Xavier Becerra. President Donald Trump has backed Hilton in the race to replace term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom. If Hilton wins in the heavily Democratic state, he would become California's first Republican governor in 15 years. More than 60 candidates appeared on the ballot in a contest that has become the most expensive governor's race in state history.
