Spain rides Merino’s late goals into World Cup semifinal
What’s next: Spain is waiting for a bigger impact from Lamine Yamal as it prepares to face France in the last four.
Spain reached the World Cup semifinals after Mikel Merino scored another late winner, extending his run of decisive substitute goals at the tournament. Merino struck in the 88th minute against Belgium after also delivering a stoppage-time winner against Portugal, giving Spain two knockout escapes in four days. Coach Luis de la Fuente praised the 30-year-old’s versatility, while Merino said simply being fit for the tournament had once seemed unrealistic. Spain has leaned on stars including Merino as teenage winger Lamine Yamal, still working back into rhythm after arriving injured, has scored once in six games. Spain will meet France in the semifinals.
