Spain minister resists calls to quit after 69 die in rail crash

What's new: Investigators found the Renfe train was traveling up to 200 kph before it hit a stalled Iryo train near Urda.

Spain's transport minister refused to step down after a high-speed rail collision near Urda killed at least 69 people and intensified scrutiny of the country's train system. Óscar Puente said his priority was to resolve the crisis and answer outstanding questions rather than discuss his future in office. A preliminary investigation found the state-run Renfe train was moving between 160 and 200 kph when it slammed into the rear of a stationary Iryo train in Toledo province on Wednesday. Puente has linked the chain of events to a computer failure that halted several trains earlier that morning. Leaked control-room audio published by Spanish media appeared to show one train received clearance to proceed even though another remained stopped ahead on the track.
