Spain high-speed train collision kills 68

Transport Minister Oscar Puente said the LZB control system failed before the Urda, Toledo, crash on the Madrid-Sevilla line.

At least 68 people were killed in a collision between two high-speed trains in Urda, Toledo, Spain, on Wednesday (28/10). The crash involved a Renfe AVE train and an Iryo train in Castile-La Mancha. Earlier reports had put the death toll at 46 and then 64 before local authorities issued the latest figure. Media reports said AVE train 20280 was traveling the Madrid-Sevilla route with 397 passengers, while Iryo train 6076 carried 147 passengers. Spain's Transport Minister Oscar Puente said the LZB control system suffered an outage at about 08.30 local time on the 63-kilometer line before the crash. After the system malfunctioned, traffic control was transferred to the Atocha control center.
