SpaceX picks Louisiana for $100 billion Starship launch hub

SpaceX plans to build a $100 billion Starship spaceport in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, turning a former Exxon property into what it says will be its main launch site for the heavy-lift rocket. The company and Louisiana officials said the facility would support thousands of flights a year, with construction beginning in 2027 and first launches expected in 2029. State materials project 3,000 direct jobs over 10 years and 8,100 indirect jobs, while SpaceX put the total at more than 10,000. The project follows Louisiana laws signed by Gov. Jeff Landry this year that eased reviews for some aerospace projects, toughened penalties for trespassing at spaceports and offered incentives. SpaceX also pledged coastal restoration work, as its Texas Starbase has drawn lawsuits and fines tied to environmental damage.
