South Carolina Senate rivals trade attacks in only debate before vote
What's new: The clash underscored a tighter-than-expected race three weeks before the general election, with outside groups spending millions.
Republican Sen. Darline Graham and Democratic nominee Annie Andrews turned their only South Carolina Senate debate into a pointed personal clash Sunday night, pressing each other’s fitness for office three weeks before the general election. The hourlong exchange ranged from Iran to the economy and artificial intelligence, but repeatedly returned to Graham’s qualifications and her ties to President Donald Trump. Andrews revived criticism from a prior runoff debate in which Graham said national security was “not my thing,” while Graham defended her record and pushed back after Andrews questioned her use of the Graham name. The race, once seen as safely Republican, has tightened in recent weeks as Democrats try to regain control of Congress.
