South Africa salvage 1-1 World Cup draw with Czechia on late penalty
What's next: South Africa stayed alive in Group A and now need a result against South Korea after opening with a loss to Mexico.
South Africa kept their World Cup hopes alive with a 1-1 draw against Czechia after Teboho Mokoena converted an 83rd-minute penalty in Group A on Wednesday. Czechia had led since the fifth minute, when Michal Sadilek finished after Alexandr Sojka’s setup, and looked set to rebound from their 2-1 loss to South Korea. Instead, South Africa recovered from another flat start and earned their first goal and first point of the tournament after opening with a 2-0 defeat to Mexico. The result leaves both teams with work to do in the final group match: South Africa face South Korea, while Czechia meet Mexico.
