Solo installs trash nets on Sungai Jenes to ease TPA load
Upstream trash will be trapped, then sorted and processed by local partners before reaching TPA Putri Cempo.
The Solo city government, together with the United Nations Development Programme and Clean Rivers, installed floating trash nets on Sungai Jenes in Pajang, Laweyan, on Saturday (1/8). The program, called Sungai Lestari, is aimed at catching trash carried downstream from upstream sections of rivers in Solo. After being trapped in the nets, the waste will be sorted and processed immediately by local partners. The scheme is expected to keep the river clean while reducing the volume of waste that ends up at TPA Putri Cempo. The Solo city government also hopes the collaboration will promote more sustainable urban waste management and raise public awareness of river cleanliness.
