Six Flags adds seat belts to coasters after Georgia death

What's new: Goliath and eight other rides at five parks will stay closed while outside engineers review safety across the chain.

Six Flags is adding seat belts to select roller coasters after a 42-year-old man was ejected from the Goliath ride and killed earlier this month at Six Flags Over Georgia. The company said Goliath will remain closed pending safety reviews, and eight other rides at five parks were also shut as a precaution. Six Flags hired independent engineers and ride inspection specialists to review procedures across all of its parks. The victim, Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, died on Oct. 12 in Austell, Georgia, and four other passengers were injured as he fell, police said. The company said Goliath and similar rides already used lap-bar restraints. Other coasters slated for seat belts include Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey and Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America in Illinois.
