Singapore prepares haze law overhaul targeting 10 companies

Under the proposed changes, NEA could force companies to hire independent assessors, and refusal could carry criminal penalties.

Singapore is preparing amendments to its Transboundary Haze Pollution Act after calling in the leaders of 10 listed companies in the country suspected of links to fires that caused haze in Indonesia. Senior Minister K. Shanmugam said the fires stem from irresponsible business practices, not a natural phenomenon. The draft changes will be tabled in parliament on November 3 by Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu. The new rules would give the National Environment Agency legal grounds to require companies to assess their operations and supply chains, including appointing an assessor; noncompliance would be an offense. Companies present included Wilmar International, Golden Agri Resources, First Resources, Bumitama Agri, Indofood Agri Resources, and Sinar Mas.
