Singapore to start S$50 weekly sea ash-scattering ferry pilot in 2027
Why it matters: The two-year trial comes as deaths are projected to rise to 40,000 by 2040 and sea scattering demand grows.
Singapore will launch a two-year pilot ferry service for families who want to scatter cremated remains at sea, starting in the second half of 2027. The National Environment Agency said the weekly service will depart from Pasir Panjang Ferry Terminal and carry multiple groups on one vessel. Each application will cost S$50 and cover up to six family members, with up to eight bereaved families on board. The agency is testing a lower-cost option as ash scattering gains popularity and 82% of people who die in Singapore are cremated. Annual deaths are projected to rise from about 26,500 in 2025 to around 40,000 by 2040. NEA will track demand and feedback before deciding whether to keep the service long term.
