Singapore to keep 25 Gillman Barracks buildings in housing plan
Why it matters: About one-fifth of the 40-hectare estate will remain green space as planners weigh housing yield and timing.
Singapore's Housing and Development Board released plans for a new Gillman Barracks housing estate that would retain 25 heritage buildings and preserve significant green areas at the former military site. The roughly 40-hectare development, near Labrador Park MRT station and the future Greater Southern Waterfront, is planned as a mix of public and private homes. HDB said the blueprint keeps more than 20 percent of the site as green space, including existing vegetation, after heritage and environmental studies assessed 86 state-owned buildings and the surrounding landscape. The agency has not set the housing yield or timeline, saying those details will follow further review and public feedback. Existing tenancies at Gillman Barracks were previously slated to expire progressively by 2030.
