Singapore reshuffles Cabinet, elevates 3 ministers and renames MTI

What's new: K Shanmugam becomes senior minister, Ng Chee Meng returns to Cabinet, and most changes take effect July 27.

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong carried out a broad Cabinet reshuffle, promoting Jeffrey Siow, David Neo and Sim Ann to full ministers and renaming the Ministry of Trade and Industry as the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry from Oct. 1. K Shanmugam will become senior minister while keeping the home affairs and national security portfolios. Labour chief Ng Chee Meng will return to government as minister in the Prime Minister’s Office. Jasmin Lau will become acting minister for manpower. Wong said the moves are part of the leadership transition and give younger officeholders bigger roles. Most of the changes take effect on July 27.
