Singapore preserves 25 Gillman Barracks buildings in housing plan
Why it matters: HDB also set aside about one-fifth of the 40-hectare site as green space while it weighs housing yield and timeline.
Singapore's Housing and Development Board released plans to keep 25 heritage buildings and about one-fifth of the future Gillman Barracks estate as green space as it prepares the former military site for housing. The 40-hectare project near Labrador Park MRT station is slated for a mix of public and private homes, though HDB has not set a unit count or development timeline. Heritage and environmental studies reviewed 86 state-owned buildings and proposed retaining key clusters, secondary forest and a forest stream. The site, first built in 1935 as a British garrison and now used for arts, dining and creative businesses, was identified in 2024 for redevelopment, with existing tenancies expected to wind down by 2030.
