Singapore preserves 25 Gillman Barracks buildings in housing plan
What's new: HDB set aside about one-fifth of the 40-hectare site for green space as it plans public and private homes near the city center.
Singapore's Housing and Development Board released plans for a new Gillman Barracks housing estate that would keep 25 heritage buildings and about 20% of the 40-hectare site as green space. The former military area will be redeveloped for a mix of public and private homes, with most secondary forest and a forest stream also slated for retention. HDB said the estate near Labrador Park MRT station and the future Greater Southern Waterfront will be designed around nature, drawing on heritage and environmental studies published Friday. The agency did not give a housing yield or timeline, saying those details will follow further review and public feedback. Existing tenancies at Gillman Barracks were previously reported to expire progressively by 2030.
