Singapore picks 3 firms for 300 MW biomethane pilot from 2028

Why it matters: The 15-year sandbox targets a fuel that can use existing gas infrastructure in a country where natural gas generates 95% of electricity.

Singapore has selected Keppel Energy, Sembcorp Utilities and Tuas Power Generation to import and supply biomethane under a pilot that could deliver up to 300 megawatts from 2028. The 15-year regulatory sandbox will let the companies source biomethane from regional and international suppliers and sell it either as gas or as biomethane-derived electricity to data centers and industrial manufacturers. Officials said the capacity is enough to meet the annual energy needs of about 600,000 public housing flats. Keppel and Sembcorp are each expected to handle up to 120 MW, with Tuas Power supplying the rest. The Economic Development Board called the initiative the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.
