Singapore opposition to press economic vision in Aug. 4 Parliament motion

Singapore's Workers' Party will bring a motion to Parliament on Aug. 4 setting out its own vision for the economy and challenging parts of the government's recent strategy review. The motion asks lawmakers to back a more equal and inclusive economy, with room for entrepreneurs, workers, households and innovation, and an engine driven by local companies, domestic demand and Singaporean capital expanding abroad. Kenneth Tiong and Jamus Lim filed the motion, and most of the party's 12 MPs are expected to speak. The party said it wants its proposal to complement, not simply oppose, the government's Economic Strategy Review, which released 32 recommendations in June as Singapore grapples with AI, tariffs, high business costs and regional competition for investment.
