Singapore mosque security tightens after child sex abuse case

What's new: MUIS will add patrols and CCTV checks, while the Muslim affairs minister ordered a wider review of child safeguards.

Singapore's Islamic Religious Council will tighten security at mosques after a 37-year-old man was sentenced to 27 years and 10 months in jail and 24 strokes of the cane for sexually abusing young boys, including rape at a mosque toilet. MUIS said it would strengthen patrols and CCTV monitoring, and Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Zaqy Mohamad directed the council to review safeguards more broadly, especially around informal activities involving children and youths. Authorities said the offender was not mosque staff, a volunteer or an accredited religious teacher under the Asatizah Recognition Scheme, but some interactions still took place on mosque grounds. MUIS said the affected family is receiving support.
