Singapore minister Faishal Ibrahim quits over online messages

Singapore’s acting minister-in-charge of Muslim affairs, Faishal Ibrahim, resigned from political office, Parliament and the ruling People’s Action Party after what he called a lapse of judgment in his interactions with a woman. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said most of the exchanges took place through online messages, with some meetings at public events. Both sides accused each other of harassment, but police and the Attorney-General’s Chambers found no criminal offense and took no action. Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam later described Faishal’s messages as “objectively, inappropriate and questionable.” Zaqy Mohamad will serve as acting minister-in-charge of Muslim affairs. PAP chairman Desmond Lee said Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC will not hold a by-election because four MPs remain in place.
