Singapore halts some Grab AV tests after Punggol near miss

What's next: regulators are reviewing whether the vehicle's response at left-turn junctions needs to be changed before testing resumes.

Singapore's Land Transport Authority ordered Grab to pause autonomous-vehicle testing at certain Punggol junctions after one of its shuttles nearly struck a schoolgirl during a left turn. The incident happened around 8:11 a.m. on Nov. 5 and was captured in a 36-second video shared online. LTA said preliminary data showed the WeRide-built vehicle had detected and tracked two pedestrians. When the child stepped into the crossing, the vehicle braked and steered right, and the onboard safety operator then took over and continued braking and steering away. The shuttle was testing a new route for Grab's planned on-demand service in Punggol. Grab runs two AV routes there and had planned to expand its fleet from 10 to 50 vehicles over six months.
