Singapore fugitive lawyer Lim Tean arrested in Johor Bahru

What's next: Singapore police are working with Malaysia to return him after he missed the start of a 3-month, 1-week jail term.

Lawyer and opposition politician Lim Tean was arrested in Johor Bahru on Aug. 6 after failing to report to Singapore's State Courts to begin a jail sentence. The Singapore Police Force said a warrant had been issued after Lim did not surrender on Aug. 3, and that it is working with the Royal Malaysia Police to secure his return. Lim, 61, is due to serve three months and one week for practicing law without a valid certificate. He was convicted in July 2024 on three charges under the Legal Profession Act after attending hearings and filing documents 32 times in 2021 without a valid practicing certificate. A review of the warrant is set for Aug. 17, when his bailor must also explain why the bail sum should not be forfeited.
