Singapore cyclist got 1 week in jail over 83-year-old woman's death

A 22-year-old former Singapore Police Force national serviceman was sentenced to one week in jail after pleading guilty to causing an 83-year-old woman's death through negligent cycling. Haaris Sulaiman was also ordered to pay S$5,000 in compensation, or serve 20 more days if he does not pay. The crash happened on April 22, 2025, on a footpath along Rochor Road after he rented a bicycle near Bugis Junction and headed home to collect his police uniform. Court proceedings said he rode at up to 14 kph in an area with a 10 kph footpath limit and struck the woman with his bicycle's left handlebar while looking right for traffic. She was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and died two days later from a head injury.
