Singapore cuts licence suspension threshold to 18 points in 2027

Singapore will tighten its demerit points system from Jan. 1, 2027, lowering the licence suspension threshold for most motorists to 18 points from 24 and extending suspension periods. Probationary drivers will face revocation at 12 points instead of 13. First-time suspensions will rise to four months from 12 weeks, second suspensions to six months, third suspensions to two years, and later suspensions to five years each. The Singapore Police Force tied the changes to worsening road safety after traffic deaths reached a 10-year high of 149 in 2025 and injuries climbed to 9,955. Offences that now carry 24 points will be reduced to 18 under the revised cap. Drivers suspended for at least a year will lose their licence and must retake their tests.
