Singapore cuts 1,200 homes from Maju, Gillman plans to save greenery
Why it matters: The revised plan keeps about 10 hectares at Maju Forest and 12 hectares at Gillman, after public backlash over forest loss.
Singapore revised housing plans for Maju Forest and Gillman Barracks, reducing the projected total by about 1,200 homes and setting aside more land as greenery after public feedback. The updated blueprint is expected to deliver about 11,000 homes over the next decade, including roughly 4,000 public units at Maju Forest and 5,500 public units within 7,000 homes at Gillman Barracks. Green space at Maju rises to about 10 hectares from 8 hectares, or about 45% of the 23-hectare site. At Gillman, retained greenery increases to about 12 hectares from 8 hectares, or about 60% of existing green cover. The changes follow objections from residents and nature groups after July proposals that would have cleared larger forest areas.
