Singapore courts, Law Society form panel on lawyer attrition

What's new: A four-year study of 855 lawyers tied departures to toxic culture, mental health strain and pressure from court timelines.

Singapore's judiciary and the Law Society of Singapore are setting up a joint working committee after a new study found lawyers are leaving private practice because of toxic workplace culture, mental health strain and pressure tied to court timelines. The four-year Legal Profession Sustainability Study, conducted by Anthro Insights, surveyed 855 practicing and former lawyers and included 31 interviews with former judges, senior and junior lawyers, and legal academics. It found some lawyers felt "scolded, ridiculed or publicly humiliated" by judicial officers, while others pointed to billing pressures, client demands and poor supervision. SG Courts said the panel will review feedback channels, case management practices and whether timeline expectations match current practice realities.
