Singapore court orders Bloomberg to pay 2 ministers S$230,000 each
What's new: The judge found malice, citing false information and Bloomberg's move to drop the paywall on the article.
Singapore's High Court awarded Cabinet ministers K. Shanmugam and Tan See Leng S$230,000 each in damages after ruling that Bloomberg and reporter Low De Wei maliciously defamed them in a December 2024 article about luxury bungalow deals. Justice Audrey Lim found the story falsely suggested the ministers used trusts or non-caveated transactions to hide property dealings and avoid scrutiny, including possible money laundering. The ruling said Bloomberg's decision to remove the paywall widened the article's reach and supported a finding of malice. The case centered on Good Class Bungalow transactions involving Shanmugam's former Queen Astrid Park home and Tan's purchase in Brizay Park.
