Singapore clears 900 MW of Malaysian solar imports for 2029

Why it matters: The two Johor projects could power about 1 million four-room HDB homes and advance Singapore’s 6 GW clean-import goal for 2035.

Singapore’s Energy Market Authority gave conditional approval to two projects to import 900 megawatts of solar-generated electricity from peninsular Malaysia, with commercial operations targeted around 2029. Sembcorp Utilities won approval for 300 MW tied to a floating solar and battery project at Johor’s Linggiu Reservoir, while Southern Solar Alliance, a unit of Ditrolic Energy Holdings, secured 600 MW from another solar-and-storage project in Johor. EMA said both developers still must secure cross-border approvals, power purchase agreements, financing and other milestones. Singapore is seeking about 6 GW of low-carbon electricity imports by 2035, equal to roughly one-third of demand, as it cuts emissions from a power sector that produces about 40% of national carbon emissions.
