Ship hit in Hormuz as US-Iran ceasefire window closes

What's new: A projectile damaged the vessel’s engine room and caused a crew casualty as talks over reopening the strait stalled.

A cargo vessel was struck by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, damaging its engine room and causing a crew casualty, according to the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations agency. The remaining crew were being assisted by the Omani Coast Guard. The attack came as the 60-day window for a negotiated U.S.-Iran settlement expired without a breakthrough and ships still could not safely pass through the waterway. Tehran was also in active talks with Oman over a deal to reopen the strait. President Donald Trump escalated tensions by threatening to bomb Oman if it interferes in negotiations and by posting an image labeling Hormuz “NEW U.S. Territory.”
