Ship attack in Hormuz clouds US-Iran push to reopen oil route

A cargo vessel was struck near the Strait of Hormuz off Oman's coast as U.S. and regional mediators pressed for an arrangement with Iran to restore shipping through the waterway. The UKMTO maritime security agency said the crew abandoned the dry bulk ship and one seafarer was missing. Qatar said contacts had reached advanced stages, while U.S. officials pointed to progress that could reopen the strait as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday. But Tehran denied that direct negotiations with Washington were under way, saying its talks were only with Oman. The strait remains largely shut after Iran halted most traffic, leaving a key artery for global oil and liquefied natural gas exports in limbo.
