Serbia raises red alert after embassy guard kills knife attacker
What's new: Authorities called it a terrorist attack, said the suspect was a monitored Serbian minor and tightened security nationwide.
A Serbian police officer guarding Israel's embassy in Belgrade shot dead a knife attacker after being wounded in the face early Wednesday, and Serbia responded by raising its security threat level to red alert. Prosecutors said the assailant, dressed in black, opened the guard booth and attacked the officer with two knives, including one that struck his left cheek. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said the suspect was a Serbian minor believed to be from Sabac and was being monitored as a supporter of Islamic State. Israel's foreign ministry said no embassy staff were hurt and the mission was closed at the time. The attack was the second violent assault at the embassy since a 2024 crossbow attack wounded another officer.
