Semeru Erupts 7 Times, Tallest Ash Column Reaches 1,000 Meters
The alert remains at Level III, with activity banned in Besuk Kobokan and within 13 kilometers of the summit.
Mount Semeru, on the border of Lumajang and Malang, East Java, erupted seven times on Tuesday from 00.45 WIB to 11.00 WIB, sending ash columns 400 meters to 1,000 meters above the summit. The tallest eruptions occurred at 05.21 WIB and 10.59 WIB, with ash drifting southwest. The Semeru Volcano Observation Post recorded the latest eruption on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 153 seconds. The volcano remains at Level III, or Siaga. Residents are barred from activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan up to 13 kilometers from the summit, as well as within a 5-kilometer radius of the crater. Data from magma.esdm.go.id also show Semeru as Indonesia's most active volcano in 2026, with 1,263 eruptions through June 16.
