Saudi keeps Riyadh airport shut after Houthi strikes kill 13

Why it matters: Airlines halted service, travel warnings spread and the FAA urged caution for US carriers flying to or over Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia extended the shutdown of Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport on Monday after weekend Houthi strikes killed 13 people and wounded more than 300, the deadliest attacks in the kingdom in more than a decade. Another strike on Sunday killed one person and injured nearly a dozen others. The civil aviation authority said the closure would remain in place while crews complete safety and readiness procedures. Cirium said 99.7% of scheduled flights were canceled Sunday, while Flightradar24 showed skies over Riyadh largely empty and about 100 flights diverted. Lufthansa Group, Air France-KLM and Etihad Airways suspended or extended cancellations, and multiple governments issued travel warnings. The Houthis claimed responsibility.
