Sandu picks financier Vasile Tofan as Moldova prime minister

What's next: Tofan has 15 days to form a cabinet, and parliament is expected to approve him because PAS holds 55 of 101 seats.

Moldova President Maia Sandu nominated financier Vasile Tofan to become prime minister on July 11, moving quickly to replace Alexandru Munteanu after his abrupt resignation earlier this month. Tofan, 44, is a senior partner at Horizon Capital and backed Sandu’s 2024 re-election bid as well as the Party of Action and Solidarity in last year’s parliamentary vote. He said his priorities are rebuilding public trust, boosting business confidence and steering Moldova toward European Union membership, with a goal of signing an accession agreement by the end of 2028. Sandu gave him 15 days to present a cabinet and government program to parliament, where PAS controls 55 of 101 seats.
