Rubio stays in Trump administration, sidesteps 2028 bid talk

What's new: The secretary of state said serving through Trump's term was "always" his plan as exit rumors swirled after GOP losses.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio pushed back on reports that he was preparing to leave the Trump administration, saying he plans to serve through the end of President Donald Trump's term. In an interview with The New York Times published Nov. 5, Rubio also refused to discuss a possible 2028 presidential run. Rubio, who is also serving as national security adviser, dismissed speculation about stepping down and said he remains focused on his current roles. The comments came after Republican election losses and amid public debate over the administration's handling of the war with Iran, Israel policy and higher gas prices. Rubio has previously said he would back Vice President J.D. Vance if Vance runs in 2028.
