Rubio opens US-led anti-left terrorism summit with 60-plus delegations

What's new: Washington says at least 65 countries joined as the US presses allies to treat far-left attacks as a bigger security priority.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio opened a State Department conference on July 16 aimed at building international support against what the Trump administration calls “far-left political terrorism.” More than 60 delegations attended the Washington meeting, with the US arguing that attacks on officials, police, businesses and infrastructure have been overlooked compared with Islamist militancy and other threats. Since November, Washington has designated four European groups as foreign terrorist organizations, including Antifa Ost and the Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front, and offered rewards of up to $10 million for financing information. Critics, including the American Civil Liberties Union, warn the policy could be used against lawful protest and political opponents.
