RSUI doctor urges weight training to strengthen all muscles

A narrow focus on one area can trigger pain, injury, and body imbalance, the doctor said.

An orthopedic and traumatology specialist from Rumah Sakit Universitas Indonesia, Latsarizul Alfariq Senja Belantara, said weight training should not target only one part of the body, but strengthen all muscles so the body stays balanced. In his view, a narrow focus can trigger pain in areas that are not trained. Alfariq also pointed to common sources of injury during weightlifting, including incorrect technique, lack of warm-up, and choosing weights that are not appropriate. For that reason, trainees need to design a program, select the right weights, and understand basic movements; if necessary, they should seek help from a personal trainer. He added that weightlifting should be combined with aerobic exercise and supported by good nutrition so that muscle, bone, and joint strengthening can proceed optimally.
