Rock spire collapse in Turkey's Cappadocia kills 3 at tourist site
What's new: Heavy rain apparently triggered the collapse near Göreme's open-air museum, and prosecutors plan an investigation.
A rock spire collapse in Turkey's Cappadocia region killed three people and injured at least five near the Göreme open-air museum, officials said after rescue crews searched through the night. The collapse happened around 3:15 p.m. local time after heavy rain set off a landslide, sending fragments from one of the area's famed "fairy chimneys" onto people near the site entrance, Nevşehir Governor Hüseyin Kök said. One of the dead was a foreign national, according to local officials. The UNESCO-listed area was closed after the incident, and the governor said checks had ended with no more victims found. Prosecutors and experts are due to begin an investigation.
