Reuters/Ipsos poll finds 1 in 3 Americans back war with Iran
Why it matters: 69% said Trump has not clearly explained the goals of US military action, a warning sign before the midterms.
Only one in three Americans support the US war with Iran, the lowest level recorded by Reuters/Ipsos since the conflict’s early phase, according to a poll conducted July 24 to July 26. The survey found 69% of respondents, including four in 10 Republicans, believe President Donald Trump has not clearly explained the goals of US military involvement. Trump’s approval rating rose 3 points from June to 37%, even as the conflict weighed on his party ahead of November’s midterm elections. The poll also comes as the war has driven gasoline prices above $4 a gallon nationwide, up from about $3 before fighting began on Feb. 28.
