Puppy abuse case in Chongqing draws 2 days of protests, clashes

What's new: Authorities opened an investigation after activists found an abandoned puppy with fractures, chipped teeth and head swelling.

A puppy abuse case in Chongqing triggered two days of protests and clashes with police after activists accused a man of adopting dogs by posing as a caring owner and then mistreating them. Chinese media reports identified the man as Li Meng. Neighbors filmed him allegedly abusing a puppy on his balcony on June 6, and an activist found one of two puppies he had adopted abandoned in a stairwell the next day. The dog had fractured limbs, chipped teeth, a cut tail and head swelling. Crowds gathered outside Li's home on June 8 and remained there on June 9, when police moved to disperse them. Video circulating online showed injuries and detentions. Local authorities said they were investigating and had taken three puppies from Li's home for veterinary care.
