Pressure grows on McConnell, 84, to disclose illness after 4 weeks
What's new: Kentucky's governor formally urged the senator to explain his condition as emergency-call audio and stretcher video fueled questions about his ability to serve.
Questions about Sen. Mitch McConnell's health intensified after the Kentucky Republican remained hospitalized for nearly four weeks without disclosing why he was admitted on June 14. His office has said only that he is receiving excellent care and improving.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, sent McConnell a letter this week urging him to be transparent about his condition and his ability to continue serving in the Senate. The push came after reports of 911 calls from McConnell's home seeking help for an unconscious person and online circulation of video that appeared to show him being taken away on a stretcher. McConnell, 84, has not appeared publicly during the hospitalization, though allies said they had spoken with him by phone.
