Presiden Abelardo leads emergency response to 7.4 quake in Colombia

Six airports suspended operations as authorities reported collapsed buildings and deaths and injuries after the quake.

Presiden Abelardo on Monday traveled to Bogota to personally lead coordination of aid after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia. He said he had set up a unified command center at the Unit Nasional Manajemen Risiko Bencana to direct the emergency response in affected areas, including Choco and Coffee Axis. Local authorities reported dozens of collapsed buildings, along with deaths and injuries. Six airports in several regions also temporarily halted operations. The Pusat Seismologi Eropa-Mediterania initially recorded the quake at magnitude 6.8 before updating it to 7.4, in line with a U.S. expert assessment.
