Pramono to rein in tall fences at Jakarta malls, offices

DKI Jakarta has no specific rule yet, but a cleanup is planned as excessive fencing is seen as casting Jakarta as unsafe.

DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung will rein in tall fences installed at a number of malls and office buildings in the capital. He said excessive fencing instead creates the impression that Jakarta is unsafe, even though the DKI administration says conditions in the city remain conducive. Pramono said the cleanup would be coordinated with mall operators, property owners, as well as security personnel and law enforcement. He said there is not yet a rule that specifically bans tall fences, but their presence is seen as disturbing urban comfort. He also suspected business owners' concerns are linked to unrest in August last year. Pramono said his vision is for a more open and green Jakarta, with fences no longer a dominant feature in urban areas.
