Pramono to decide soon the fate of Jakarta bike lanes

DKI Jakarta is weighing whether to keep bike lanes after cyclist groups pushed to retain them and residents said motorcycles often use them.

DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said he will soon decide the fate of Jakarta's bike lanes after receiving sharply conflicting input. Cycling communities, including Bike to Work, have asked that the lanes be kept. Others argue the lanes are ineffective because motorcycles use them more often, especially on major roads and during rush hour. Pramono said the decision will be made carefully so it is not influenced by his own hobby of cycling. He said he usually rides a road bike on holidays or Saturday mornings. Earlier, Muhammad Taufik Zoelkifli, a member of Commission B of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, urged that the bike lanes be maintained because they are important for environmentally friendly transportation and public health.
